
The year is about to come to an end, the clock has started ticking and the giants of literature from around the world are ready to off to the Pink City – Jaipur. Yes, we are here talking about the most prestigious event that happens every year, which is Jaipur Literature Festival. The event always takes place in January in Diggi Palace, Jaipur. Lots of People not only from India but also from outside the country come and celebrate the amalgamation of different literature under one roof. So before moving ahead and talking more about this literature extravaganza, let us make you introduce to a brief post about the pioneering and success of the festival.
History of Jaipur Literature Festivals
With an idea to bring authors, writers, journalists and every personality that is related to literature bring together, Jaipur Literature Festival was founded in 2006. In its inauguration year, it drew a crowd of merely 100 attendees. Shobhaa De, Namita Gokhale, William Dalrymple, and many other renowned personalities visited this festival. The level of the festival grew with the passage of every year. It started to become livelier, more interactive, and more nourishing. Salman Rushdie 2007 and John Berendt were major centers of attraction in 2007 and 2008 respectively. By the year 2009, the festival started gaining popularity. It was the year when the festival took itself to another level and witnessed 12,000 attendees and over 140 authors/speakers, nationally and internationally. Tina Brown, Hanif Kureishi, Colin Thubron, and Farah Khan attended that 5 days literature gala.
In 2010 festival had 30,000 attendees and 172 authors/speakers. In 2011 the number increases to 226 including some renowned names such as Prasoon Joshi, Javed Akhtar, Gulzar, and Farhan Pramukh. JLF took another leap in its’ level when famous international talk show host Oprah Winfrey attended Jaipur Literature Festival 2012. One more major center of attraction was Mr. Anupam Kher, the versatile actor, and writer who attended the festival. He talked about his book ‘The Best Thing About You Is You’.
The year 2015, was about to be a special one in JLF’s history. The festival held over 300 events in 10 venues beyond the four walls of Diggi Palace. Guests such as Chetan Bhagat and Amish Tripathi participated that year, but what added more value this year is the session from our former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam who drew 5000 handsome crowds to the front lawns of Diggi Palace. 2015 became special because lyricists Javed Akhtar with Girish Karnad also gave their session on the development and enhancement of literature along with versatile artists Naseer-Ud-Din Shah and Shabana Azmi.
In 2016 the festival was inaugurated by Rajasthan’s CM Mrs. Vasundhara Raje Scindia.
Literature Festival 2023 – A Synopsys
What started as a humble, simple festival has now become a world-famous phenomenon Just like Every year, the festival will be held for 5 days and will going to take place in the royal Diggi Palace. This year JLF is turning 10 years. Some of the renowned speakers of the festival would be Alice Walker, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and Mark Haddon some authors just to name a few.
